Toyota Vios
This popular four-door subcompact car was first introduced in the year 2002 for the Asia Pacific region. It was originally a replacement for the Tercel. Toyota aimed for the Vios to fill-in the B-segment class, under the Camry and Corolla. It was also to compete in the compact sedan segment against strong contenders like the Honda City, Nissan Sentra, and Mazda 2.
Different variants of it were designed and manufactured to suit each of the these Asian countries’ needs: China, Philippines, Thailand, Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia. And in some parts of USA, Canada, Middle East, and Australia, it was marketed as the Yaris Sedan.
The first generation Vios was marketed from the year 2002 until 2007. It was certainly a hit in those Asian countries as its design was adapted from the Platz with some body panel modifications. Also, other portions of it were design concepts from the E120 Corolla. It also gained popularity because some countries have used the Vios for taxicab fleets.
Now the second generation Vios was seen from the year 2007 till 2013. By the year 2009, it was awarded as the best-selling car in Southeast Asia. To improve the previous version, they now designed it more for comfort than for handling. The interiors were really upgraded this time, with more convenience features.
Finally, the third generation Vios is the one launched last 2013 and is still seen in roads up to this date. This latest generation Vios is more mature more than ever. Toyota now aims to provide its owners and drivers the ultimate definition of value for money. Hence, focusing on its new slogan: Value beyond belief. Toyota has improved its exteriors by giving it a luxury sport design. The body is definitely larger and more importantly, the interior is more spacious than the two previous generations. Some countries even have a sporty Vios model that come with full body kits.
